2004 Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN

One program sponsored by TC 10.7 is scheduled for Wednesday at 11:15 am – Forum 27 “What’s Needed for Controls and Fault Detection for Commercial Refrigeration Equipment?” moderated by John Gallaher.

Starting this year, ASHRAE will begin recording audio of all presentations and this will be included on a DVD synchronized with PowerPoint presentations from the program.

2005 Winter Meeting in Orlando, FL

A Seminar originally planned for the Nashville meeting on vending machines can be submitted for this meeting. Michael Martin volunteered to chair this program with the title “Energy Efficiency Advances for Vending Machines”. Potential speakers include Ramin Faramarzi, David Cowen, Larry Eils, and Steve Cousins (from Coca-Cola).

Van Baxter has three papers in the review process which can be submitted for a Symposium. Both Van and Hugh Henderson expressed possibilities of obtaining a fourth paper to add to these. The deadline for final papers is August 6, 2004. A working title has not yet been formulated pending the availability of additional papers.

TC 2.5 is planning a Seminar titled “Success Stories in Reducing Refrigerant Leaks” and would like to know if TC 10.7 would be interested in co-sponsoring this program.

Forum topics proposed included “Energy Issues with TEWI and New Refrigerants” and “HFC System Leaks”. These were combined into a working title of “Have we realized the environmental benefits from the change to HFC’s in Commercial Refrigeration Systems?”. Cynthia Gage volunteered to chair this Forum.

The following program package was proposed for submission for the 2005 Winter Meeting:

      1. A Symposium (title to be formed) chaired by Van Baxter.
      2. A Seminar titled “Energy Efficiency Advances for Vending Machines” chaired by Michael Martin.
      3. A Forum titled “Have we realized the environmental benefits from the change to HFC’s in Commercial Refrigeration Systems?” chaired by Cynthia Gage.
      4. Co-sponsoring of a Seminar (with TC 2.5) titled “Success Stories in Reducing Refrigerant Leaks”.

A vote on the proposed program package was approved unanimously.

2005 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO

Several papers may become available for inclusion in a Symposium to be chaired by Van Baxter. These may include topics from Ramin Faramarzi on secondary coolant system energy benchmarking and on vending machines. Papers from Cynthia Gage, Clark Bullard, and a European source may also be available for inclusion. Van Baxter will submit a call for papers in an upcoming issue of ASHRAE Insights. Deadlines are mid-October 2004 for drafts and mid-February 2005 for final papers.

A Seminar on high efficiency vending machines was proposed by Ramin Faramarzi. Potential speakers included Ramin, a soft-drink manufacturer, and a vending machine manufacturer. A presentation on glass front bottle coolers could also be included by Ramin – if this is ready in time, this may be added to the similar Seminar propose for the Orlando meeting. David Cowen volunteered to possibly add a presentation to this program. Michael Martin volunteered to chair the program.

John Gallaher proposed a seminar on commercial refrigeration systems to be part of the “back to the basics” series in either this meeting or at the 2006 Winter Meeting in Chicago.

    2. Research Committee (C. Gage)

The Research Subcommittee met Sunday evening. A new “point system” is being implemented by ASHRAE to determine prioritization of research projects.

Points will be determined from the following categories:

      Support from Other Societies: 45%
      Anticipated Application of Results: 10%
      Identified Sources of Co-Funding: 10%
      Sponsoring TC Vote: 10%
      RAC Vote: 10%
      Tech. Council Preview Feedback: 5%

Research priorities are also in the process of being re-defined to focus on the specific categories – the list will be released when finalized. The main focus of research projects should continue to provide enhancement to the handbook content and/or provide commissioning guidelines for end users.

Two additional RTAR’s can be submitted by Aug. 1, 2004 for consideration at the research committees August meeting. Work statements for these projects will be reviewed after the 2005 Winter Meeting.

A project was proposed to compare the use of open cases vs. closed door cases. Although several companies have performed internal studies to determine effects on shopping patterns, the results are almost always kept proprietary. Co-Sponsoring of such a project by FMI would almost be required. Chairman Gallaher noted that he will be speaking at the FMI Energy meeting this fall in Dallas and volunteered to communicate our research priority list to FMI to gage support for such a project. Ramin noted that Southern California Edison may be able to facilitate some sort of field study for the project, possibly in the form of an in-kind contribution. Cynthia will work with Ramin Faramarzi and Carl Roberts on the RTAR for this project.

A project was proposed on the effects of relative humidity and indoor air quality on commercial refrigeration systems. This could be used to determine the optimal relative humidity that should be maintained in the store to minimize energy consumption. Effects of ASHRAE Standard 62 on overall cost of ownership could be assessed. It was noted that several studies have been published which look at effects of humidity on display case operation including an ASHRAE Seminar presentation by SCE at a program sponsored by this committee. Chairman Gallaher noted that the results of this study should be incorporated into the next Handbook revision.

The following TC 10.7 research priorities were proposed by the Research Subcommittee:

#1) “Best Practices for the Start-Up and Operation of Commercial Refrigeration Equipment”
#2) “The Advantages and Disadvantages of Doors vs. Open Display Cases”
#3) “Energy Impacts of Poor Maintenance Practices”
#4) “HFC Leakage compared to HCFC’s and CFC’s”

A vote on the proposed research priorities was approved unanimously.

    3. Handbook Committee (R. Faramarzi)

A meeting of the handbook subcommittee will be held immediately following this meeting. An action plan for revising the Refrigeration Handbook Chapters 47 and 48 is to be discussed. Any committee members interested in assisting with this revision were invited to attend.

    4. Standards Committee (V. Baxter)

Standard 117-2002 - Method of Testing Closed Refrigerators
This standard is published and available in the bookstore

Standard 72-1998 - Method of Testing Open Refrigerators
Michael Martin reported on activities of the SPC -72 1998R. The second public review of the combined standard (with 117) has closed and comments have been received. Final approval of the Standard by the subcommittee hinges on a single “thorny” issue regarding the recommendation of target product temperatures in the appendix.

Standard 32.1-2004 - Methods of Testing for Rating Bottled and Canned Beverage Vending Machines
This standard has been voted on and approved and will be published soon.

Standard 32.2-2003 - Methods of Testing for Rating Pre-Mix and Post-Mix Soft-Drink Vending and Dispensing Equipment
This standard is published and available in the bookstore.

    5. Webmaster (C. Roberts)

Next month ASHRAE will implement a new server which will handle all TC websites. This will allow the inclusion of all seminar presentations, committee member contact information, and meeting minutes.

  7. New Business:

A call for papers was announced for CLIMA 2005, a world congress held every four years and focusing primarily on air conditioning. The meeting will be held October 9-12, 2005 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Abstracts are due September 30, 2004.

ASHRAE has added a new section to their Website featuring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s). Steve Hemerly has been compiling questions and may request assistance from our TC if the topic falls under our expertise.

ASHRAE is requesting volunteers to speak at the 2005 Winter Meeting in Orlando to support programs celebrating 100 Years of Refrigeration.

Bill Brantley inquired if there would be interest in forming a research project investigating the effects of oil additive products on refrigeration systems. The topic may also be of interest to other TC’s such as TC 8.1 - Positive Displacement Compressors, or TC 3.2 Refrigerant System Chemistry.

  8. Adjournment:

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and seconded. A vote to approve the motion was unanimous.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m.

These minutes are submitted by David Hinde, January 28, 2005.
