Agenda for Technical Committee 10.7
2003 ASHRAE Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, OH
June 25, 2001
- Welcome and Introduction:
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Eckhard Groll at 2:15 p.m. A sign-up sheet was circulated. Members and guests introduced themselves and their company affiliation.
- Review and Revise Agenda:
Eckhard Groll introduced the agenda. No changes were proposed and the agenda was approved as written.
- Recognition of Liaisons and Announcements:
- Research Committee Liaison: (G. Briley)
George Briley reported from the Research Committee. The RTAR has been approved for our Priority #1 research project "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets". The work statement is due to ASHRAE by Sept. 15, 2001 for consideration at the 2002 Winter Meeting. As limited funds are available for research right now, it will be difficult to get projects approved; a well-written and finely detailed work statement will help with this process.
A Research Subcommittee Chair Workshop will be held during the Winter and Annual Meetings on Monday mornings from 6:30-8:00 AM. This program is designed to help subcommittee chairs better understand the process of getting project through the approval process.
- Handbook Committee Liaison: (G. Wyatt)
Gerald Wyatt reported from the Handbook Committee. Current revisions for Chapters 47 and 48 are supposed to be complete and turned in to ASHRAE by now. As these revisions are now behind schedule, all efforts must be made to complete as soon as possible.
- TAC Section Head: (C. Bullard)
Clark Bullard, the current TAC Section Head, presented a congratulatory plaque to Chairman Groll thanking him for his service as the Chairman of TC 10.7.
- Announcements: (E. Groll)
Chairman Groll announced that members of the committee can request that a "thank-you" letter be sent from the president of ASHRAE to the respective member's employer commending them on their service to ASHRAE. A sign-up sheet was passed to request this letter.
- Membership: (E. Groll for J. Vana)
It was determined that a quorum was not present (5 voting members of 11 present), thus all voting will proceed by e-mail shortly after this Annual Meeting.
- Minutes: (D. Hinde)
Written copies of the minutes of the TC 10.7 Meeting at the 2000 ASHRAE Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, were distributed for review prior to the 2001 Winter meeting. Chairman Groll summarized the minutes. Minor changes were noted and are:
- R. Uhl has declined the position of Vice Chairman and will be replaced by J. Gallaher
- Correct spelling of G. Briley, the TC 10.7 Research Committee Liaison
- Add "Benchmarking" as the first word of the title of our first priority research project
- Correct spelling of M. Martin, Chairman of committee revising Standards 32.1 and 32.2
A revised version of the minutes will be distributed via e-mail and will include a vote for approval of the minutes. (Note: The minutes were approved by e-mail vote on 07/18/01.)
- Committee Reports:
- Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2001 Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, OH
TC 10.7 is sponsoring three programs during this Annual meeting. On Sunday, Cynthia Gage chaired a Symposium on "Aspects of Secondary Fluid Systems and Space Conditioning in Supermarkets" and reported attendance of 40-50 people. Comments were generally very good; some in particular requested there be more than three papers presented. Also on Sunday, Bill Burdwood chaired a Seminar on "Performance and Defrost Issues with Refrigerated Display Cases". Around 40 people attended with good comments. Finally, a Forum titled "Can Energy Benchmarking be Useful for Tracking Supermarket Efficiency?", moderated by John Gallaher, will be held on Tuesday at 11:15 am. It is hoped that this forum will generate information useful for our highest priority research project on the same topic.
2002 Winter Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ
P. Hrnjak is working on a symposium on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" to be presented at the 2002 Winter Meeting in Atlantic City. Six papers have been received and 5 have completed initial reviews. Generally, only minor modifications will be required, though one paper received a negative review. Symposiums may be composed of 3-5 papers, so if some of the paper revisions are not complete in time to submit the symposium package for the Atlantic City Meeting, they could form another symposium at the 2002 Annual Meeting in Hawaii.
Van Baxter has volunteered to chair a seminar on "Low Charge Refrigeration Systems" and has 3-4 speakers lined up.
Topics suggested for forum included "What's needed for more efficient supermarkets?" and "Market barriers for display case doors - real or perceived?". A forum on door usage on medium temperature display cases seemed most applicable to the Winter meeting as more end users would be present. As the schedule is already tight for this meeting, a third choice may not be accepted. R. Faramarzi volunteered to moderate this forum and to possibly conduct a survey of marketing personnel on door usage at the FMI Energy conference in September.
The deadline for program submissions for the Cincinnati meeting is August 3, 2001. The program submissions for the Atlantic City meeting were proposed in the following priority:
- Symposium on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" chaired by P. Hrnjak
- Seminar on "Low Charge Refrigeration Systems" chaired by V. Baxter
- Forum on "Market Barriers for Display Case Doors - Real or Perceived?" moderated by R. Faramarzi.
A vote for approval of this program list will be held by e-mail. (Note: The proposed program was approved by e-mail vote on 07/18/01.)
2002 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, HI
A Symposium on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" chaired by P. Hrnjak may consist of papers not used in the symposium at the 2002 Winter Meeting and could be combined with some additional papers. C. Gage volunteered to chair a seminar on "Defrost and Temperature Control Strategies for Display Cases".
2003 Winter Meeting in Chicago, IL
A call for papers to form a symposium on "Supermarket Refrigeration Issues" will be placed in the ASHRAE Journal by H. Henderson.
- Research Committee (C. Gage for M. Khattar)
Cynthia Gage reported on research activities.
Current Priority 1). "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets" - A first draft of the work statement has been completed by M. Khattar and will be circulated for review. Comments should be forwarded to C. Gage by August 1, 2001. A revised version will then be distributed and a vote will be held by e-mail to approve the final work statement before submittal to ASHRAE which must be completed by September 15, 2001.
Current Priority 2). "Good Practices and Procedures for Commissioning Supermarket Refrigeration Systems" - J. Gallaher and M. Khattar are working on the RTAR for this project.
Proposed Priority 3). "Optimization of Air Curtain Performance in Display Cases" - R. Faramarzi will write the RTAR for this project.
Proposed Priority 4). "Survey on Medium Temperature Display Cases" - No one has yet been selected to write the RTAR for this project.
A vote will be held by e-mail to approve this research priority list. (Note: The research priority list was approved by e-mail vote on 07/18/01.)
- Handbook Committee (E. Groll for M. Palladino)
The latest draft of the chapter 47 and 48 revisions was distributed by M. Palladino shortly before this Annual Meeting, though several members have not yet seen it. R. Faramarzi had several comments on the chapter 47 revision and would like to add new information which has been compiled in the industry since the last revision was made, particularly detailing energy usage, case loading, and information on the new FDA temperature requirements. As Mr. Faramarzi is the incoming Handbook Committee Chair, he will coordinate the additional handbook revisions from now on. D. Hinde volunteered to make some additional revisions to the section on secondary coolant systems and will coordinate this with Mr. Faramarzi. A revised version of the chapters will be distributed to committee members by July 2, 2001 for review and a vote by e-mail will be held to approve the chapters before submittal to ASHRAE. H. Henderson stressed how critical it is to complete this process quickly as ASHRAE is waiting for this information.
- Standards Committee (B. Schaeffer)
Buzz Schaeffer reported on standards activities. A final draft of Standard 117 has been completed and submitted to ASHRAE; a publishing date has not yet been given.
Although Standard 72-1998 was just recently published, our committee must decide by October 14, 2002 if we would like to revise again, to reaffirm, or to withdraw this standard. Some suggestions have been made in the past that Standard 72 and 117 should be combined. A vote will be held at the 2002 Winter Meeting to determine this.
Standards 32.1 and 32.2 revisions should be in the process of selecting revision committee members, though no one has heard from committee chairman M. Martin. V. Baxter will contact Mr. Martin to find out the status of the committee. TC 10.7 must approve the members on the revision committee and we need to make sure all interested parties are represented. The next step will be to put together a recommended membership roster.
An announcement from Doug Tucker (from ARI) noted that drafts of revised Standard 8.10 (automatic ice makers) and Standard 8.20 (ice storage machines) are available and reviewers are needed. Interested persons should contact V. Baxter for additional information.
- New Business
C. Gage noted that the EPA is working on adding supermarkets to the types of commercial buildings which can receive an Energy Star rating.
Chairman Groll announced that the IIR 21st Annual Congress of Refrigeration will take place August 17-22, 2003 in Washington, DC. Several commissions relate to the work of our Technical Committee. Chairman Groll is on the program committee for this congress and they will be issuing a call for papers during April or May of 2002.
P. Hrnjak announced the jointly sponsored University of Illinois and IIR Conference on New Technologies in Commercial Refrigeration which will be held July 22-23, 2002 in Urbana, IL . This conference takes place following the International Compressor Engineering Conference and the International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference at Purdue University held July 16-19, 2002.
The course development committee responsible for Professional Develop Seminars likes our idea for a PDS on "Commercial Refrigeration Systems". We have the option of either developing an outline and submitting it to the committee who will then request development proposals, or, someone on our committee can submit a course proposal directly. Awards of up to $25k are available for development of these courses. L. Hettinger proposed forming a subcommittee to develop a preliminary outline. D. Hinde and J. Gallaher volunteered to participate, with Mr. Hettinger as the committee chair. Outlines for proposed courses have no specific deadline and can be submitted at any time.
Several meeting attendees expressed a desire to become Corresponding Members or upgrade from Corresponding to Voting Members. Decisions on committee membership are made during the Winter Meeting. The committee chairman is to contact Regina Stafford regarding roster changes. Eckhard Groll, our outgoing Chairman should be listed as a Corresponding Member. Shawn Knapp, currently a Corresponding Member, would like to become a Voting Member. Roger Wightman (XDX, Member #5217213), and Carl Roberts (Zero-Zone), both guests, would like to become Corresponding Members. In addition, Elmer Subera, a Voting Member, should be removed from the roster, and Cynthia Gage is listed twice.
- Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
These minutes are submitted by David Hinde, July 13, 2001.
