- Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2002 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, HI
No programs sponsored by TC 10.7 were approved for the Honolulu meeting.
2003 Winter Meeting in Chicago, IL
The symposium on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" chaired by P. Hrnjak which was not approved for the Honolulu meeting can be resubmitted. A call for papers on "Supermarket Refrigeration Issues" generated an additional 5 papers which are now in the review process; three of these will likely be easily approved. All these can be combined together to form either one or two symposia for the Chicago meeting.
A seminar on "Low Charge Refrigeration Systems" chaired by V. Baxter which was rejected for the Atlantic City meeting and inappropriate for the annual meeting will be resubmitted for this meeting.
The program package for this meeting is due to ASHRAE by August 2, 2002. Hugh and Pega will determine if one or two symposia will be possible. A vote to approve the program recommendations will be held via email.
(NOTE: This vote has not yet taken place.)
2003 Annual Meeting in Kansas City, MO
Assuming only one symposium on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" is approved for the Chicago meeting, a second one of similar nature should be available for this meeting.
- Research Committee (C. Gage)
Cynthia read a letter from Richard Kelso on behalf of Krishna Murty of India. Mr. Murty requested that their Central Food Technological Research Institute be added to ASHRAE's list of approved research organizations for bidding on potential projects. He also stressed the desire to see additional research in the area of food preservation as this is of high importance in his hand other developing countries.
Current Priority 1). "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets" - The Work Statement for this project went out for bid and received 3 proposals. The Research Committee has not yet met to make a final recommendation to TC 10.7. The deadline for our recommendation to ASHRAE is August 22, 2002. A vote will be held to approve the TC 10.7 recommendation to ASHRAE via email in the weeks following this meeting.
(NOTE: The TC 10.7 contractor recommendation was approved by a majority of members via email vote on 7/17/02.)
A vote via e-mail will be held to determine if we should continue working on our Priority 2 and 3 research projects, though it is generally believed that this work should continue.
(NOTE: This vote has not yet taken place.)
Current Priority 2). "Good Practices and Procedures for Commissioning Supermarket Refrigeration Systems" - Status of the Work Statement is unknown. Cynthia will contact J. Gallaher and B. Burdwood to determine the status.
Current Priority 3). "Optimization of Air Curtain Performance in Display Cases" - V. Baxter and J. Behr will be working on the Work Statement for this project. R. Faramarzi previously volunteered to assist but this was deemed inappropriate as he is a potential bidder on the project.
ASHRAE would like us to discuss very short-term projects dealing with anti-terrorism. No obvious topics were found.
We need to discuss long-term projects during the Chicago meeting. ASHRAE would like to hear about any long-term wild ideas we may have.
Esher Kweller asked if there was a need for a testing facility to test full-store applications as opposed to testing these in actual supermarket installations which tend to be difficult due to uncontrolled environments, shopping patterns, etc. M. Martin noted that PG&E has a large food service testing facility and R. Faramarzi explained the capabilities of the SCE RTTC facility.
Also noted was the fact that multiple Energy Acts are being debated in the U.S. Congress. The DOE is proposing test procedures to determine the evaluation of energy performance of various types of refrigeration systems and equipment.
- Handbook Committee (R. Faramarzi)
A final cleanup of Chapters 47 and 48 was completed in January and represents a major face lift for this information. ASHRAE was very satisfied with the results as published in the distributed books. No additional activities are under way and no further information has been received from ASHRAE regarding electronic versions of these or future chapters.
- Standards Committee (V. Baxter)
Standard 117 - Method of Testing Closed Refrigerators
Final approval of this standard was given by the Standards Committee during the Atlantic City meeting. The standard is not yet published due to delays; M. Martin will look into the reasons for this and add to the minutes if possible.
Standard 72 - Method of Testing Open Refrigerators
John Rasch chaired an unofficial meeting on Sunday afternoon. The Standards Committee has given approval to revise the standard, but has not yet approved a membership roster or committee chairman. Currently, 13 volunteers have expressed interest in membership on this committee and represent a wide range of backgrounds.
Volunteers for the revision committee are:
John Rasch, Hussmann
Ramin Faramarzi, Southern Calif. Edison
Lowell Hettinger, King Soopers
David Hinde, Hill Phoenix
Michael Martin, Calif. Energy Commission
Michael Palotsee, Giant Eagle
Mark Paquette, Intertek Testing Services
Carl Roberts, Zero-Zone
Yunho Hwang, University of Maryland
John Murray, Sporlan Valve Co.
Rob Uhl, Safeway
Bill Tritsis, ARI
Bodh Subherwal, BR Laboratories, Inc.
The deadline for submission of committee membership applications, biographical records and conflict of interest forms is August 22, 2002.
The combining of Standards 72 and 117 was discussed during the meeting and there was agreement that an appropriate first step was to compile a side-by-side comparison to see where there are similarities and where there are differences.
An alternative to combining the standards is to have them evaluated on the same time schedule and by the same revision committees to ensure consistency between them. This would solve several issues that have been expressed about the current versions.
Standard 32.1 - Methods of Testing for Rating Bottled and Canned Beverage Vending Machines
Standard 32.2 - Methods of Testing for Rating Pre-Mix and Post-Mix Soft-Drink Vending and Dispensing Equipment
M. Martin reported that the committee membership for revising these standards now consists of eighteen people with wide industry representation. The membership includes representatives from Coca-Cola, Pepsico, and 3 vending manufacturers.
Regarding ARI Standards 810 and 820, it was reported that these likely do not relate to us and should not require interaction from our committee.
