Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2005 Winter Meeting in Orlando, FL
Two programs sponsored by TC10.7 were accepted for this meeting:
A Symposium titled "Advances in Supermarket Display Case Technology" chaired by Van Baxter will be held on Wednesday from 8:00 - 10:00 am.
A Seminar titled "Refrigeration Applications Over the Past 100 Years" co-sponsored with TC 10.1 and TC 10.9 was held this morning and included a presentation by John Gallaher on "Evolution of Refrigerated Food Display and Storage Equipment Over the Past 100 Years". Good feedback was heard on all the presentations.
2005 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO
A Seminar originally planned for the Orlando meeting on vending machines can be re-submitted for this meeting. Michael Martin originally volunteered to chair this program but be one of the speakers; Viktor Anderson volunteered to be the chair with the title "Energy Efficiency Advances for Vending Machines". Speakers will include Michael Martin, Ramin Faramarzi, and David Cowen. Michael will additionally try to get a speaker from Coca-Cola.
A Forum on HFC's moderated by Cynthia Gage was also rejected for the Orlando meeting and can be re-submitted. A Sunday morning time-slot should be requested under the reason that resulting discussion may generate ideas for the research subcommittee meeting held later Sunday afternoon.
Dan Dettmers representing the Refrigeration Committee requested that TC10.7 co-sponsor one of the "Back-To-Basics" Seminars. John Gallaher was proposed as one of the speakers. It was noted that co-sponsoring programs does not hurt our chances of getting other programs in.
Van Baxter arranged for a call for papers in the ASHRAE Insights but this did not result in any submissions.
The following program package was proposed for submission for the 2005 Annual Meeting:
1. A Seminar titled "Energy Efficiency Advances for Vending Machines" chaired by Viktor Anderson.
2. A Forum titled "Have we realized the environmental benefits from the change to HFC's in Commercial Refrigeration Systems?" chaired by Cynthia Gage.
3. Co-sponsoring of a "Back-To-Basics" Seminar with the Refrigeration Committee.
A vote on the proposed program package was approved unanimously. Submission of the program package is due to ASHRAE by February 18, 2005.
2006 Winter Meeting in Chicago, IL
Van Baxter still has some potential papers that could form a Symposium. Final papers would be due by April or May to negotiate the review process. An additional "call for papers" can be submitted; although this is rarely productive, it is easy to implement. One of the European display case manufacturers may also be willing to participate.
A Seminar on high efficiency vending machines was proposed by Ramin Faramarzi. Potential speakers included Ramin, a soft-drink manufacturer, and a vending machine manufacturer. A presentation on glass front bottle coolers could also be included by Ramin - if this is ready in time, this may be added to the similar Seminar propose for the Orlando meeting. David Cowen volunteered to possibly add a presentation to this program. Michael Martin volunteered to chair the program.
John Gallaher proposed a seminar on general topics in commercial refrigeration, possibly submitted as part of the "back to the basics" series. Topics could focus on systems, display cases, and components.
A Seminar was suggested focusing on standards issues with display cases and could included information on standards or requirements by ASHRAE, NSF, ARI, ISO, FDA, UL, and possibly state or local governments. Ramin Faramarzi and Michael Martin have contacts that may be able to speak on California regulations. Bob Tanner has contacts at UL and NSF that may also be able to participate. The working title "Code and Regulatory Issues Affecting Commercial Display Cabinets" was proposed. Bob Tanner volunteered to chair this program.
A Seminar on "replacing R-22 in commercial refrigeration systems" was proposed by Mark Spatz. A similar seminar was given at the last FMI Energy meeting and generated a lot of discussion.
Submission of the program package for the Chicago meeting is due to ASHRAE by August 5, 2005.
Research Committee (C. Gage)
The current TC 10.7 research priorities are:
#1) "Best Practices and Procedures for Commissioning Refrigeration Systems"
#2) "Comparison of Vertical Display Cases"
#3) "Energy Impacts of Poor Maintenance in Refrigeration Systems"
#4) "HFC Refrigerant Leakage in Commercial Refrigeration Systems"
The RTAR for our #2 project "The Advantages and Disadvantages of Doors vs. Open Display Cases" was submitted and approved by RAC. One critical comment received on this project was that this would likely involve studying impact on sales which may be inappropriate for ASHRAE funding. Seitz van der Sluis representing TNO has seen some published papers in Dutch on this topic - Van Baxter will obtain these and attempt to get translated. It may also be possible to word the work statement such that the project involves monitoring door opening patterns, then let an outside organization (such as SCE) monitor the sales implications. There may be additional information in an EPRI report about 10 years ago studying mutli-deck freezer cabinets.
Carl Roberts volunteered to head the writing of the Work Statement for the doors projects with assistance from Ramin Faramarzi, Mary Saroka, Michael Martin, and Bob Tanner. A draft of the work statement can be discussed at the Denver meeting.
The work statement for our #1 project "Best Practices for the Start-Up and Operation of Commercial Refrigeration Equipment" was distributed prior to this meeting for review and requires committee approval prior to submission to ASHRAE.
A vote on the work statement for the project "Best Practices for the Start-Up and Operation of Commercial Refrigeration Equipment" was approved unanimously.
Next step for this project is to form a Project Proposal Evaluation Committee. John Gallaher volunteered to chair this committee with Bob Tanner, John Murray, and Van Baxter participating.
ASHRAE is continuing work on a Strategic Plan for Research with outside consultants. They have held several workshops to get feedback and will be publishing the results in the ASHRAE Journal. This plan is to be finalized at the Annual Meeting in Denver. Some very real concerns exist the plan in its current form de-emphasizes refrigeration in favor of air-conditioning - lobbying efforts are under way.
Standards Committee (V. Baxter)
Standard 117-2002 - Method of Testing Closed Refrigerators
This standard is published and available in the bookstore
Standard 72-1998 - Method of Testing Open Refrigerators
John Rasch reported on activities of the SPC -72 1998R. ASHRAE SPC is expected to vote on the final version of the standard revision during the Annual Meeting in Denver. If approved, this will be published sometime in early 2006.
Standard 32.1-2004 - Methods of Testing for Rating Bottled and Canned Beverage Vending Machines
This standard is published and available in the bookstore.
Standard 32.2-2003 - Methods of Testing for Rating Pre-Mix and Post-Mix Soft-Drink Vending and Dispensing Equipment
This standard is published and available in the bookstore.
John Rasch reported that the ARI Standard 1200 is in the process of obtaining ANSI approval which is done via the "canvass method". Michael Martin gave a detailed explanation of this process. ASHRAE, as a balanced group, will be asked to provide feedback on this standard and this task will likely be deferred to our committee for advisement. Comments for improvement must be submitted to ARI by March 31, 2005.
