Agenda for Technical Committee 10.7
2001 ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Atlanta, GA
January 29, 2001
- Welcome and Introduction:
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Eckhard Groll at 2:15 p.m. A sign-up sheet was circulated. Members and guests introduced themselves and their company affiliation.
- Review and Revise Agenda:
Eckhard Groll introduced the agenda. No changes were proposed and the agenda was approved as written.
- Recognition of Liaisons and Announcements:
- Handbook Committee Liaison: (G. Wyatt)
Gerald Wyatt reported from the Handbook Committee. Mr. Wyatt stated that general comments from handbook users indicate that the chapters are "not applied enough" for use by engineers. A presentation of the "handbook of the future" held earlier in the Winter Meeting was very interesting and well attended. The TC10.7 committee should be approving a draft of our handbook chapters at this time and they should be ready for review by July 1, 2001. Currently, he believes that we are slightly behind this schedule, but that it is not a problem.
- Research Committee Liaison: (G. Briley)
George Briley reported that the Research Committee is over budget and won't be able to support as many projects. Concern was expressed that the publications and manuals are not useful enough for field application; more "how-to" manuals were requested. May 15 is the deadline for new work statements for consideration at the Annual Meeting. A request was made to verify how current research project requests affect programs, handbooks, codes, etc. M. Khattar offered that RP 596, "Effects of Indoor Space Conditions on Refrigerator Performance" resulted in two symposium papers but had no affect on the handbook. It was suggested that M. Palladino contact Ron Howell to add this information to the handbook chapter revisions.
- Membership: (E. Groll for J. Vana)
New Officers and Sub-Committee Chairs were selected and are:
Chairman: Buzz Shaeffer
Vice Chair: John Gallaher
Program Chair: Hugh Henderson
Research Chair: Cynthia Gage
Secretary: David Hinde
Standards Sub-Committee Chair: Van Baxter
Handbook Sub-Committee Chair: Ramin Faramarzi
A number of people volunteered to become voting and corresponding members. It was determined that a quorum was present (7 voting members of 11 present).
- Minutes: (D. Hinde)
Written copies of the minutes of the TC 10.7 Meeting at the 2000 ASHRAE Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, were distributed for review prior to the 2001 Winter meeting. No changes to the minutes were proposed. A motion was made by R.K. Herbert to accept the minutes as written; the motion was seconded by B. Schaeffer. The motion was approved unanimously.
- Committee Reports:
- Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2001 Winter Meeting in Atlanta, GA
Two programs were approved for the 2001 Winter Meeting: Seminar 34 "Applying the FDA Food Code in Supermarkets" chaired by H. Henderson, and Seminar 41 "Utilization of Electronic Control System Data to Optimize System Maintenance" chaired by B. Burdwood, but were mistakenly both scheduled for Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at 8:00am. Our third requested choice, a Forum on energy benchmarking, was not approved but may be resubmitted for the 2001 Annual Meeting in Cincinnati.
2001 Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, OH
C. Gage reported on the progress of a Symposium entitled " Secondary Loop Refrigeration Systems" proposed for the Cincinnati meeting. Three papers for this program have been received, one each on defrost issues, medium temperature supermarket systems, and developments on secondary systems. A fourth paper on humidity affects may replace one of these pending the author's approval. C. Gage made a motion to change the title of the Symposium to "Advanced Topics in Supermarket Refrigeration". The motion was seconded by K. Herbert and was approved unanimously.
The deadline for program submissions for the Cincinnati meeting is February 9, 2001. The submissions for the Cincinnati meeting will be made in the following priority:
- Symposium on "Advanced Topics in Supermarket Refrigeration" chaired by C. Gage
- Seminar including two papers from R. Faramarzi on display case issues and one by H. Henderson on liquid dessicants for defrosting display case coils, chaired by B. Burdwood.
- Forum on energy benchmarking to be moderated by J. Gallaher.
2002 Winter Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ
P. Hrnjak suggested a symposium on "Refrigeration System Performance" which he volunteered to chair. A seminar on zero leakage refrigeration systems and charge reduction was also suggested; V. Baxter volunteered to find interested speakers, possibly involving TC 3.8 - Refrigerant Containment. Also suggested were programs on secondary coolant sytsems/TEWI analysis and space conditioning issues in supermarkets.
- Research Committee (M. Khattar)
Mukesh Khattar reported on research activities. It was noted that the research committee meeting on Sunday was well attended; two presentation were given by R. Faramarzi on research from SCE. Of the three project priorities decided on at the last meeting, the second priority will be eliminated as this has already been done; the number three priority will now become number two:
Priority 1). "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets", compiling information from various end-users on operation and maintenance costs. (RTAR to be rewritten by C. Gage and M. Khattar to clarify.)
Priority 2). "Good Practices and Procedures for Commissioning Supermarket Refrigeration Systems", including non-competing technologies from various equipment manufacturers. (RTAR by J. Gallaher and M. Khattar)
Suggestions for possible new research projects included a performance comparison of mechanical versus electronic EPR systems in refrigeration equipment. R. Faramarzi and B. Burdwood will work on an RTAR for this project.
- Handbook Committee (M. Palladino)
Chairman Groll read from an e-mail received from M. Palladino. The following timeline for completion of chapters 47 and 48 (formerly 31 and 47) was submitted:
February 15: Deadline to identify contributors
March 15: Deadline to submit material
April 15: Submit draft to TC for review
May 1: Deadline for TC comments on first draft
May 15: Final draft to TC for approval
June 15: Deadline for TC approval
July 1: Submit Chapters 47 and 48 to Handbook Committee
A vote for approval will be held during the Annual Meeting in Cincinnati. M. Khattar, K. Herbert and J. Gallaher expressed interest in assisting with the review of the two chapters. Electronic copies of the two chapters may be requested from Scott Zeh of ASHRAE; he may be contacted at Szeh@ASHRAE.org.
- Standards Committee (B. Schaeffer)
Buzz Schaeffer reported on standards activities. Standard 72-1998 is published and has been out for some time. Standard 117 revision is continuing; at a meeting on Sunday, some changes were voted down and no further revisions should be necessary. On Standards 32.1 and 32.2, M. Martin was approved by the Standards Committee to chair the committee to revise these, he is currently contacting people to be on the committee.
- New Business
ASHRAE is looking for volunteers to develop technical bulletins on any topic of interest to ASHRAE members to better convey our activities to the general membership. Interested persons should contact Martin Wylin for more information.
ASHRAE Insights newsletter is looking for volunteers to report on TC activities like research project reports and abstracts with the goal of increasing TC membership. R. Faramarzi volunteered to write a short summary of his presentations made at Sunday's research program meeting.
M. Khattar suggested the possibility of TC 10.7 producing a Professional Development Seminar on "Commercial Refrigeration System Design". A PDS may take one of three forms: full or half day short course, two or four hour seminar concurrent with Annual or Winter Meetings, or an independent learning seminar. The TC committee would not be responsible for content as the work is contracted out; but the committee is allowed to review the information before publishing. P. Hrnjak gave a summary of the "Fundamentals of Supermarket Refrigeration Short Course" offered by the University of Illinois every spring. L. Hettinger motioned that we request a PDS on commercial refrigeration system design. The motion was seconded by K. Herbert and was approved unanimously.
P. Lundquist noted that the papers presented at the Annex 26 seminar on Heat Pumps during the October 2-3, 2000 meeting will be available on CD or from their website at heatpumpcentre.org. A conference focusing on supermarket leakage to be held June 2002 in Stockholm, Sweden was also announced; information is available on the website.
- Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
These minutes are submitted by David Hinde, June 18, 2001.
