- Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2003 Winter Meeting in Chicago, IL
Two programs sponsored by TC 10.7 were presented on Sunday.
Seminar 1, "Analysis Methods and Field Test Results for Low-TEWI Supermarket Refrigeration Systems"
Symposium CH-03-01, "Advances in Supermarket Refrigeration"
Both programs were attended by 200-250 people and comments were very favorable.
2003 Annual Meeting in Kansas City, MO
R. Faramarzi proposed a Seminar relating to various aspects of the current DOE/ORNL funded project dealing with improvements in display cases using new technologies. Such improvements include flow visualization and modeling techniques to optimize air curtain design and display case performance, enhanced coil designs, and new lighting techniques. Presenters could include R. Faramarzi, D. Walker, a representative from academia, and a representative from Wolverine Tube. D. Hinde volunteered to chair this Seminar with R. Faramarzi assistance with the speaker list.
Additional program suggestions included Forums on:
- What's needed for controls and fault detection
- Self-contained systems and energy efficiency
- Forums, however, are generally poorly attended at Annual Meetings and are more appropriate for Winter Meetings.
A motion to approve the seminar proposed by R. Faramarzi titled "Energy Efficiency Opportunities in Supermarket Display Cases" as our single program submission for the Annual Meeting was made by H. Henderson and seconded by M. Martin. A vote on the motion was approved unanimously.
The program package for this meeting is due to ASHRAE by February 7, 2003.
2004 Winter Meeting in Anaheim, CA
Additional papers from the Symposium on "Advances in Supermarket Refrigeration" organized by P. Hrnjak are currently in the review process and should be available for presentation at this meeting.
- Research Committee (C. Gage)
Current Priority 1). "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets"
The results of the e-mail vote approving a TC 10.7 contractor recommendation for this project were submitted to the Research Committee for approval. The results of the vote were 0 (zero) votes for, 4 (four) votes against, and 5 (five) abstentions. Negative opinions given for this poor result were that the project was not needed and that the supermarket industry historically doesn't contribute to the research fund. TC 10.7 has the option of challenging this decision and the general feeling was that this should be done. Funding of this project may elicit more research funding from the supermarket industry.
A motion to challenge the vote was made by J. Gallaher and seconded by R. Faramarzi. A vote on the motion was approved with 7 votes for, 0 votes against, and one abstention.
Current Priority 2). "Best Practices for the Start-Up and Operation of Commercial Refrigeration Equipment"
The Work Statement must be submitted by August for consideration this year. The word "commissioning" was removed from the title because of its broad definition. A copy of the RTAR was sent to Chad Stark from the Food Marketing Institute for comments on industry perspectives; Mr. Stark stated that this is a good project and is very timely, however no funding from FMI is available. He also recommended contacting David Cellars from Portland Energy as he gave a presentation on this topic at the last FMI Energy Meeting and may be able to provide some additional resources to enhance the project. We will also attempt to find someone in the building commissioning group to gather more information. All comments should be forwarded to J. Gallaher as he is working on the Work Statement for this project.
ASHRAE sponsored a breakfast with the focus of "Changing the Research Process". The discussion centered on creating a long-term strategic plan to identify critical issues and emerging technologies. A breakout session by Section 10 commented that little refrigeration research is being done and that the Research Committee does not have a good understanding of refrigeration.
- Handbook Committee (R. Faramarzi)
Chapters 47 and 48 of the 2002 Refrigeration Handbook have been published for some time and voting members of the committee should be sure review these. Minor revisions can now be made to the electronic version on an annual basis and are due February 1st of each year. We also need to review the information on the ASHRAE website regarding Handbook - Authors and Revision Guide. This will assist us in making sure the handbook chapters are consistent with ASHRAE philosophy.
ASHRAE would like to know if there is any need for animation and interactive graphics in our chapters. We can recommend addition of this if we feel it would better convey the information, though most members felt this would tend to benefit the more novice reader. Interested parties should contact R. Faramarzi.
- Standards Committee (G. Gallaher for V. Baxter)
Standard 117 - Method of Testing Closed Refrigerators
The new revision of this standard has been published and is available in the ASHRAE Bookstore.
Standard 72 - Method of Testing Open Refrigerators
John Rasch chaired the SPC-72 meeting on Sunday and reported good turnout with most voting members present along with several guests.
The current membership of the revision committee is:
John Rasch, Hussmann
Michael Martin, Calif. Energy Commission
David Hinde, Hill Phoenix
Carl Roberts, Zero-Zone
Bodh Subherwal, BR Laboratories, Inc.
Michael Palotsee, Aetos Construction
Bill Tritsis, ARI
Rob Uhl, Safeway
Fred Wong, Food Service Tech. Center
John Murray, Sporlan Valve Co.
The committee voted to combine Standards 72 and 117. Comparisons between the two indicated few differences. A revised title, purpose, and scope were also approved. All TC members will be alerted to the date/time of the next meeting.
Standard 32.1 - Methods of Testing for Rating Bottled and Canned Beverage Vending Machines
Standard 32.2 - Methods of Testing for Rating Pre-Mix and Post-Mix Soft-Drink Vending and Dispensing Equipment
M. Martin reported that the revision for Standard 32.1 has been approved by the Standards Committee for public review. Standard 32.2 has been recommended for final publication.
Standard 29 - Method of Testing Automatic Ice Makers is currently overseen by TC 10.2 (Ice Rinks). The Standards Committee feels that this overseeing committee is not appropriate and would like TC 10.7 to be the cognizant committee.
A motion to recommend that TC 10.7 be the cognizant committee for this standard was made by M. Martin but was not seconded.
- Webmaster (C. Roberts)
The following information is planned to be posted on the committee's website:
- Scope and Purpose of the TC
- Meeting Minutes
- Membership (optional)
- Program Information
Meeting Minutes will not be published on the site until final approval is given at the next meeting. Minutes from past meetings can also be posted; D. Hinde will supply several meetings worth. The committee website is currently being hosted by the University of Wisconsin until ASHRAE takes this function over. We will also need permission from each member prior to posting contact information.
