- Program Committee (H. Henderson)
2002 Winter Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ Our first priority program, a symposium entitled "Advances in Commercial Refrigeration" was held earlier this morning. P. Hrnjak chaired this program and reported that there were three papers presented to an audience of about 85 people. Several favorable comments were received.
Our second and third priority programs were not scheduled for this meeting and were a seminar chaired by V. Baxter on "Low Charge Refrigeration Systems" and a forum moderated by R. Faramarzi on "Market Barriers for Display Case Doors - Real or Perceived?"
2002 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, HI
A symposium chaired by P. Hrnjak on "Advanced Refrigeration Systems" chaired by P. Hrnjak has at least 3 papers submitted (and 4 working titles) and several people volunteered to assist in reviewing. It was also proposed to change the name to "Energy Efficient Technologies in Commercial Refrigeration."
The two programs rejected for the Winter Meeting do not make sense for a summer meeting due to low end-user attendance and so should not be submitted for the Honolulu meeting. C. Gage had volunteered to chair a seminar on "Defrost and Temperature Control Strategies for Display Cases" however the status of this program is not known.
A final program package for this meeting is due to ASHRAE by Feb. 8, 2002.
A motion was made by B. Schaeffer to approve P. Hrnjak’s symposium as our #1 Priority program for the Annual Meeting. The motion was seconded by B. Burdwood and approved unanimously.
2003 Winter Meeting in Chicago, IL
The seminar on "Low Charge Refrigeration Systems" chaired by V. Baxter will be resubmitted for this meeting.
A call for papers to form a symposium on "Supermarket Refrigeration Issues" was placed in the ASHRAE Journal by H. Henderson. Two abstracts were received and will be forwarded to P. Hrnjak for possible inclusion with some of the extra papers from the Honolulu program. Papers for this symposium would be due in April or May of this year for consideration.
The program package for this meeting is due to ASHRAE by July 31, 2002. We may need to vote on a program package for this meeting prior to the Honolulu meeting as it is likely that a quorum will not be present.
ASHRAE is encouraging committees to submit programs for the next meeting over the internet. V. Baxter reported that this is a fairly simple process.
- Research Committee (B. Schaeffer for C. Gage)
B. Schaeffer reported on research activities.
Current Priority 1). "Benchmarking Energy Use in Supermarkets" - Work Statement has been approved (see attachment to these minutes) but the project is on hold pending reprioritizing of accepted projects by RAC. The DOE has given ASHRAE money for this project so it should be near the top of the list for approval.
Current Priority 2). "Good Practices and Procedures for Commissioning Supermarket Refrigeration Systems" - RTAR has been submitted. J. Gallaher and B. Burdwood will be working on the Work Statement for this project.
Current Priority 3). "Optimization of Air Curtain Performance in Display Cases" - RTAR is completed. R. Faramarzi and V. Baxter will be working on the Work Statement for this project.
Current Priority 4). "Survey on Medium Temperature Display Cases" - No one has yet been selected to write the RTAR for this project.
Submission of Work Statements for consideration at the Annual Meeting in Honolulu must be submitted to ASHRAE by May 10. Preferably, these should be submitted to M. Hewett two weeks prior to this date for her review and suggestions for improvement.
Additional notes on the project bidding process include the rules that the committee Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary should not bid on their committee’s research projects.
Proposals for future projects were discussed. R. Faramarzi noted that Forums in the program are a good way to gather information and gauge interest in future research projects (our benchmarking project was formed this way). It was suggested that an email be sent to all committee members soliciting comments. Project proposals included "Controls and Fault Detection for Commercial Refrigeration Systems" and "Walk-in Cooler/Freezer Designs" addressing load calculation methods and defrosting issues.
- Handbook Committee (R. Faramarzi)
The final drafts of the chapter 47 and 48 revisions were submitted to ASHRAE and have been approved for adoption. The committee expressed thanks to Ramin for his valuable work on this project.
B. Schaeffer noted that the main focus of the Chairman’s meeting was making the electronic version of the Handbook the primary source of information. More useful information can be included electronically including links to other chapters, websites, photos, video clips, etc. ASHRAE will be e-mailing a questionnaire all voting members to get feedback on this. Questions will address:
- Guidance on version of video player for use with video and sound clips
- Interactive graphics/animation software
- Calculations/modeling requirements
- Database requirements and software
- Links to other chapters
B. Schaeffer noted that the main focus of the President’s meeting was making the electronic version of the Handbook the primary source of information. More useful information can be included electronically including links to other chapters, websites, photos, video clips, etc. ASHRAE will be e-mailing a questionnaire all voting members to get feedback on this. Questions will address:
- Standards Committee (V. Baxter)
Van Baxter reported on standards activities.
Standard 117 - Method of Testing Closed Refrigerators
Publication of the completed standard is in the approval process and should be available for purchase by the Honolulu meeting.
Standard 72 - Method of Testing Open Refrigerators
Although Standard 72-1998 was just recently published, our committee must decide by October 14, 2002 if we would like to revise, reaffirm or to withdraw this standard. Some changes have been requested.
A motion was made by J. Gallaher to revise the standard. The motion was seconded by B. Schaeffer. Discussion included the possibility that Standards 72 and 117 should be combined. Combining standards is encouraged by ASHRAE when appropriate. Following approval to revise Standard 72, it may be possible to expand the scope to accomplish this.
A vote was then held to revise Standard 72 and was approved unanimously.
John Rash volunteered to chair the sub-committee to revise these. Additional volunteers to assist with the revision included M. Palotsi, L. Hettinger, M. Martin, R. Faramarzi, M. Paquette and D. Hinde. Further details will be provided at the Honolulu meeting.
Standard 32.1 - Methods of Testing for Rating Bottled and Canned Beverage Vending Machines
Standard 32.2 - Methods of Testing for Rating Pre-Mix and Post-Mix Soft-Drink Vending and Dispensing Equipment
M. Martin reported that the committee membership for revising these standards has been approved and consists of twelve people with wide industry representation. Fourteen people attended the subcommittee meeting on Sunday morning. Revisions to Standard 32.1 include provisions for equipment to turn machines off when not in use and should be fairly minor. Revisions to Standard 32.2 will be more extensive. Representatives from the Coca-Cola Company and McDonald’s indicated that the standard was "grossly out of date" and "lots of work will be needed."
The revision of ARI Standard 810 - Automatic Commercial Ice Makers, and Standard 820 - Ice Storage Bins, is still an open issue. V. Baxter will look into how our committees interaction may be required and how these may relate to ASHRAE Standards 72 and 117, however no action appears to be required at this time.
ASHRAE will be conducting a poll to gather information on how ASHRAE Standards are being referred to in other organizations standards or building codes. It was noted that our Standards 32.1, 72 and 117 are referenced in California building codes and their Appliance Energy Efficiency Standards which will be adopted soon.
