Clark Bullard recognized Dan Dettmers, the outgoing Chair, with an award, for his service to the Committee and to ASHRAE.
- RESEARCH - GORDON FOLLETTE
- Update on PMS for 1154-RP - Dan Dettmers for George Smith
In light of the fact that no vote was taken by the PMS, a vote of the whole Committee was taken. Doug Reindl and Dan Dettmers excused themselves, from the room for the vote (conflict of interest). Ajay Chatlani assumed the Chair for the voting procedure. It was moved by Brian Simkins and seconded by Garry Peakman to approve 1154-RP as presented. The motion was passed with no opposition.
- Update on PMS for 1214-TRP - Bryan Becker
Copies of the Research Paper were sent to volunteers for review. The PMS met Sunday with Bryan Becker, Brian Fricke and the student participants for discussion and incorporation of the comments.
The Refrigeration section has yet to be reviewed.
The corrected paper will be sent out for further review prior to the Winter Meeting in Anaheim.
- Update on RTAR/Work Statements
Comparison of Refrigerated Warehouse Dock Construction Techniques. We have not been able to recruit "outside funding", however Don Fenton will solicit the IARW. George Briley volunteered to sit on the PMS for the project when it accepted. A motion was made to accept the Work Statement. The motion was passed by the voting members in attendance.
Long Time Performance Characteristics of Insulated Panels. Gordon Follette to prepare Work Statement.
- Review/ Revision of Long range Research Plan/RTAR's
Benchmarking Energy Usage in Refrigerated Warehouses. Brian Simkins to prepare RTAR
Guidelines for Selection of Evaporators for High Humidity Applications for Refrigerated Storage Facilities. George Briley and Gordon Follette to write RTAR.
A Study to Determine the Costs and benefits of Electrically Heated Fast Acting Doors vs. Vestibules. No action taken.
Air Quality Guidelines for Personnel in Refrigerated Rooms and Facilities. No action taken.
Simulations of Cold Storage Facility Evaporator Placement for Optimum Operations. No action taken.
Energy Simulation Model for Refrigerated Warehouses. It was suggested that there is no commercial software currently available to perform the simulation. Consequently, it would not be financially feasible to undertake the project. It was suggested that TC10.5 co-sponsor a Forum to judge interest within the ASHRAE membership. "Do ASHRAE Members Need an Energy Simulation Model for Refrigerated Warehouses?" We would reassess priority of the project after the Forum.
- HANDBOOK - BILL HUMM
Bill suggested that the next revision could include portions of the Design Guide. We should start the revision process next year.
- PROGRAM - ED FUHRMANN
- Report on Seminar 34. Basic Refrigerated Warehouse Design
Garry Peakman reported that we received good "grades" on our presentations. As with our previous seminars, very few written comments were offered. There were two negative comments regarding commercialism on one presentation. Due to an oversight by the monitor, we included a slide with contact information, at the end of the presentation. We will need to be careful in the future. The most common comment was a positive comment regarding the "basic" nature of the seminar. Ajay commented that the attendance could be better at the Winter Meetings, with a larger attendance of students and junior engineers, due to the Trade Show. Garry suggested we consider more "diverse" content in our seminars. Dan Dettmers suggested we put the seminar on the website. The motion to put the seminar presentations on the website was seconded and passed. It was noted that we would need written permission from the presenters.
- Program for the Winter Meeting in Anaheim
In keeping with Ajay's suggestion, it was decided to apply for another "Design Basics Seminar" for Anaheim. The following presenters and topics were volunteered:
1. George Briley - Refrigeration System Efficiency
2. Doug Reindl - Defrost Alternatives and Strategies
3. Dan Dettmers - Remediation Methods for Underfloor Heaving
4. Garry Peakman - Insulated Panel Screw-ups
5. Ajay Chatlani - Chairman
- OTHERS
No other business.
- WEBSITE - DAN DETTMERS
The website needs updating. We have been getting "hits" from prospective committee members, so it would appear the website is attracting attention to TC 10.5, as hoped. Dan will add a page dedicated to the Refrigerated Warehouse Guide, as it becomes available.
- CHAIR'S REPORT ON SECTION 10 - DAN DETTMERS
Dan said the topics of Section 10 Meeting had been covered already.
